Our clinic provides complete services for the evaluation, diagnosis, and management of patients with central airway disorders. The multidisciplinary clinic team includes otolaryngologists, pulmonologists, and speech pathologists with specialized expertise and interest in these disorders.
What are the symptoms of airway problems?Shortness of breath is one of the most common symptoms of airway problems. Other common symptoms include chronic cough or throat clearing and talking difficulties. Patients with airway problems may also have problems swallowing.
What are examples of the airway disorders treated at this center? The airway can be blocked by scars (subglottic or tracheal stenosis) or tumors (benign or malignant). In some cases the airway can become too soft or floppy (tracheomalacia). These diseases are closely related to, and can overlap with voice disorders. The Airway Disorder Center focuses on diseases of the central or larger airways. Diseases of the small airways such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are seen by our colleagues in the Pulmonary clinic.
How are airway disorders treated? The Airway Disorders Center at the University of Utah uses a variety of surgical, medical, and behavioral management techniques. A proper diagnosis and thorough evaluation are necessary prior to treatment planning.
